St Michael and All Angels Church, Bedford Park

Help us to make it a Green Christmas by recycling your tree and cards! Christmas Tree

Christmas is special at St Michael’s, but we recognise it can be a time of over-indulgence. How can we reconcile that with our ‘Make Every Day a Green Day’ scheme, the Church of England's Shrinking the Footprint campaign and the Chiswick Eco-Village project, trying to reduce our carbon footprint and that of the local community?

As Christmas decorations come down, one of the tips for our 'Green Christmas' Competition was to give details of where to recycle trees, cards and mobile phones locally. We hope you find it useful. If you have other tips to pass on, let us know at publicity@smaaa.org.uk.

a) Christmas treesChristmas Tree

If you live in the Hounslow part of Chiswick, the Council will now collect your Christmas tree from your home. They say: "During January simply place your real Christmas tree out on your normal garden waste collection day." More details here.
Please note that trees cannot be dropped at Chiswick House Grounds this year. Much of the park is closed until the Spring for restoration. Details here.

If you live in Ealing (or don't want to wait for Hounslow Council), you can leave your tree on Acton Green Common, opposite Turnham Green Tube station or opposite Ramillies Road, or at the Acton recycling centre on Stirling Road, off Bollo Lane. More details here: They say: "Christmas trees will be shredded, turned into compost and mixed with soil to make the borough's parks and open spaces bloom next Spring".

b) Christmas cards Christmas Tree

The Woodland Trust is recycling cards. You can drop them in a bin inside the front entrance of Marks & Spencer in Chiswick High Road.
WH Smith is also part of the scheme but please note that Tesco Express in the High Road is not taking cards. The Woodland Trust says it will plant thousands of trees as a result.

And Eco Age at 213 Chiswick High Road say: "One of our favourite artists, Lucinda Ganderton, will use the cards you received this year to create new exciting ones for you to send out next Christmas. Bring your cards to Eco by January 15th and you will be able to collect the new creations from November 2009." The price is not finalised but may be around £3 per card.

c) Mobile phones

Eco Age will also take your old phone. There's a bin at the back of the shop. Please take the charger if you’ve got it. Mobiles which are in good condition are sold in Europe: 100% of the profit goes to charities. Those which are broken are repaired and given free in the third world countries. Those which are unusable have the materials separated and recycled in UK facilities.
